🕊️ He can be manipulative and mean if it gets him what he wants, which is generally to move forward or to bring the truth to light
🕊️ He's flirtatious, teasing, and has the capacity to be very acerbic when he feels like being blunt instead of cagey
🕊️ Joshua is genuinely intelligent, clever, and wise, but that just makes him all the more grating
🕊️ He's flippant about life and death, and is also passively suicidal

AU History: Joshua was born to a Russian-Japanese family that immigrated to Japan during the 1950s. Growing up, he learned to be fluent in English, Japanese, and Russian, but that only served to isolate him from his peers. He looked very different from the other kids his age, and he was often excluded from playing with them because of it. It didn't help matters that Joshua was able to see ghosts, monsters, and real magic while the others couldn't. Talking about them made people scared or think he was crazy, so he simply stopped talking about it to anyone.
When he was a teenager, he met someone who could see the same things he could. Joshua was wary of them at first, but eventually he started to open up and ask questions. He was utterly fascinated with the Underground. For the first time, Joshua had a friend that he could talk to about all of it, and that was liberating for a time.
It was a real pity. Joshua would've possibly been a happier person if his story stopped there.
He was attacked by a crazed man who wanted to use his death to gain power. Whether that was true or not, the ensuing struggle awakened Joshua to both his power as the Composer and his memories of that life. Or lives, as the case may be. Joshua had accidentally killed the man as a result. The Black Order came knocking on his door soon after with an offer to join them or have the consequences. Joshua had weighed his options, understanding that he was going to miss something on account of their suspicious timing. Something felt wrong to him. ... But he was still 15 and he still loved his parents, even though they were grossly neglectful of him. Plus, he had his only friend's safety to think about, too.
So, he agreed to join, but he didn't think that that were truly recruiting him. With the way his power worked, he understood that the second he left the Shibuya district. Joshua began to unravel, and Shibuya was going with him. Combined with his rebellious personality, The Order's Unyielding decided to tamper with that power. Instead of being bound spiritually to Shibuya, he was bound to the Meropede deep under the harbor in Kaisou. He'd been there ever since, and passed the time by making sure he drove his jailers to drink. It was the only way Joshua could keep himself sane... and also to make absolutely certain that they knew he thought the zealots were foolish pawns. At least some of the Guardians were kind enough prison guards to leave him some books to read.
AU Personality Differences: 🕊️ A lot lonelier since he didn't have a longtime friend this time around
🕊️ A bit more trust issues after being imprisoned like this for so long
🕊️ Somehow, even more pining for friendship/companionship

-Is a strain on normal people when in a pact with them because of how much power he has (would've killed Neku if he had been in a pact with him for longer than a week, for example)
-Very difficult to track since he is untraceable, but not impossible so long as you know what he looks like (for example, when Neku tried to read Joshua's thoughts, he got actual nothing)
-Existentially bound to a city in such a way that if Joshua dies without a replacement, the city also dies; by that same token, if the city is annihilated, Joshua will die
-If Joshua is killed by someone, THEY will become the Composer that replaces him
